Network Testing Labs Calls FaceTime's RTGuardian 'A World Class Internet Gateway'
July 20 2006FaceTime Communications, the leading provider of solutions for securing and managing greynets, today announced that Network Testing Labs (Mobile, Ala.), the world's foremost independent security testing facility, has recognized the RTGuardian 500 with an "excellent" rating based on five key criteria: identifying and thwarting malware, ease of use, reports, installation and documentation.
By awarding FaceTime its "World Class Award" for spyware, IM and P2P gateway security, Network Testing Labs concluded that RTGuardian offers an excellent way to protect a network from spyware infection.
"These test results confirm the importance of our strategy to understand real-time communications applications, and secure and control their use in the enterprise," said Kailash Ambwani, president and CEO of FaceTime Communications. "Because of this deep understanding of how these applications operate on a network, we can more effectively thwart inbound threats, stop intentional or unintentional information leakage and ensure that organizations can maintain communications compliance."
Performance: Quick, Robust and Reliable
The report notes that the RTGuardian appliance inspects inbound and outbound traffic without impacting network performance. Instead of sitting inline and potentially delaying traffic, the RTGuardian is deployed in passby mode where it enforces policies set by the IT administrator.
The report says "FaceTime's approach is simply brilliant," protecting the entire network without becoming a bottleneck for Internet traffic. Overall, the report said the appliance was "quick, robust and reliable."
Effectiveness: Complete Protection
The testing report states that "the RTGuardian unit did an especially good job of recognizing IM and P2P protocols ... and thwarting all spyware regardless of their channels of propagation (IM, P2P, HTTP)." The tests showed that RTGuardian detected 100 percent of IM protocols, and 99 percent of P2P protocols, providing complete protection. As hackers and threats increasingly target new methods and applications to access important data, companies must find a solution that adapts beyond email filtering and virus signatures. The RTGuardian system blocked 96 percent of other malware, spyware and adware.
The increasing popularity of Skype in the enterprise has raised new security concerns because Skype data disguises itself on a network to insure a consistent and ubiquitous communications path. As a result, legacy security products are unable to recognize, stop or control Skype traffic. However, testing showed that RTGuardian effectively detects and controls Skype.
Ease of Use: Truly a Hands-off Tool
Network Testing Labs raves about the RTGuardian's ease of use, noting the browser-based interface and dashboard overview. Calling it "truly a hands-off tool," the test report says the configurable whitelist and blacklist entries make it highly customizable and flexible.
The dashboard interface allows administrators to schedule automatic updates of both spyware definitions and firmware. The built-in report generator helps an administrator produce reports on several options and criteria, ranging from the simple to complex explanations of network traffic.
