Latest Acucorp Software Release Features Automated Java and .NET Interoperability

June 28 2006

Acucorp, Inc., a global provider of software solutions that modernize COBOL business systems, today announces the release of Version 7.2 of extend. With Version 7.2, organizations can significantly enhance their legacy applications and reduce development time by taking advantage of automated Java and .NET interoperability, MySQL(R) access, new compatibility enhancements, automatic code generation, and seamless updates to Acucorp's client-server technology.

"COBOL is a robust, and stable, language -- one that is responsible for running the business processes of leading organizations around the world," explains Drake Coker, Acucorp's Chief Scientist and Co-Founder. "With Version 7.2 of extend, COBOL developers will benefit from even better application interoperability and performance, enabling them to leverage their business systems and gain market share."

New in Version 7.2

* Automated Java and .NET Interoperability

Version 7.2 offers new ACUCOBOL-GT(R) compiler options to automatically create Java and .NET interface programs for calling COBOL applications. In addition, a new native .NET application programming interface (API) now allows a .NET program to call a COBOL program. As a result of these enhancements, COBOL business systems can more easily be incorporated into a Web services project. And since Java and .NET developers do not need to write the code necessary to call the COBOL program, they can avoid the costs and risks associated with recreating the functionality natively.

* MySQL Access

As the leading COBOL for Linux, Acucorp expands its support for the open-source movement by offering access to MySQL, the open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). With Acucorp's SQL pre-compiler, AcuSQL(R), developers can retrieve data from MySQL in Linux, UNIX and Windows environments. This provides customers with access to a popular, and fast growing, alternative database.

* Compatibility Enhancements

Version 7.2 includes numerous compatibility enhancements, such as AcuSort, a free utility program that performs sorts and merges on any binary, line sequential, or Vision file from the command line or control file. This new, feature-rich sort utility makes it easier for developers using other versions of COBOL to move to Acucorp's ACUCOBOL-GT development system. It also significantly reduces sort times and expands the COBOL application's sort capacity.

* Automatic Code Generation for Graphical Controls

Version 7.2 of Acucorp's AcuBench(R) integrated development environment (IDE) features drag-and-drop capabilities for creating graphical controls such as list boxes, combo boxes, paged grids, and paged list boxes. The IDE automatically generates the complex code required to load data in these controls -- saving hours in programming time and letting developers take advantage of more advanced controls for better functionality.

* Updates to Thin Client Client-Server Technology

Acucorp is the only COBOL provider to offer its own Thin Client solution, which makes it possible for programmers to display the user interface portion of their applications on a Windows client machine while the rest of the application runs on a UNIX, Linux, VMS, or Windows server where data access is local. With Version 7.2, Thin Client automatically updates the users' machines with the same version that is running on the server. This substantially reduces maintenance time and cost, since programmers can update the server or application runtime without having to manually update the user machines. It also minimizes disruption, as end users are not affected by these updates.
